The Latest Act Of Theft By State Governments: Internet Access Taxes

My ISP's customer service home page contains an announcement that several states, effective yesterday, have enacted a new series of taxes on Internet Service Access. I hadn't heard that these were imminent (fortunately my state isn't among those that have enacted this monstrosity – yet), but I'm not surprised. As more and more states continue to suffer the consequences of their years of fiscal irresponsibility during the FED-induced technology and housing bubbles, we will see more and more of these economy-destroying taxes enacted.

Stand by: The ride is gonna get rockier!

The reasoning goes beyond mere "theft" in the form of further taxes. As if that isn't bad enough. No, it comes to the point that they want to squelch speech completely by making it too expensive to participate. Only the ones with deep pockets and in the bed with politicians are considered "serious" media so while it is a small step forward for further totalitarianism it's a camels nose seeking to get into the tent. Further "fees" may be in the offing.

MoT, let's hope not. The good news, however, is that the techno-retards who make up the majority of the political class are absolutely incapable of grasping the simple fact that "the Internet" is NOT one monolithic entity that can be controlled from a single point of access, or even multiple points of access. With the leaps and bounds made in wireless communications over just the last few years and the already well-entrenched (and growing) networks of privacy and anonymity services, the web is going to treat this attempt at regulation the way it treats every attempt at either regulation or censorship, which is much the way that the human body reacts to a viral infection or a damaged organ. That is, new avenues of access will open up. People will find back-door ways to gain internet access that DO NOT involve the ISPs or major telecom firms and that do not require formal contracts or service subscriptions. As Newton pointed out, for each and every action, there is an equal and opposite REACTION. This applies to modern technology as well as simple physics!

It reminds me of that line in Jurassic Park where the chaos theory scientist says that "nature finds a way".
