Welcome to Liberrants, a blog dedicated to editorials, discussions, and studies of all things libertarian. Don't let the title mislead you; it's merely my attempt to be creative in describing myself as a "hopeful curmudgeon" who embraces the goal of the free, peaceful, economically vibrant society envisioned by America's founding fathers. A critically thinking curmudgeon whose goal, in addition to creatively venting about the imperfect world in which we live, is to induce critical thinking in others. The ultimate goal is to help bring about a peaceful world in which we can all live in freedom.

Amen, Brother! But Will the Congregation Hear the Message to the Choir?

LRC today posted this article (originally posted at by Charles Marsh, Professor of Religion at UVA and a self-described evangelical Christian, decrying the American evangelical movement’s sacrifice of Christian principles in exchange for political power, most visibly exhibited by their hearty support for George W. Bush and the war in Iraq. Like so many other evangelicals who see the light and are attempting to redirect the evangelical masses’ attention to what Christ through the scriptures actually says about the subject of war, Marsh faces an uphill battle.

I’m not sure what it will take to wake “Christian” America up to the fact that it has, collectively, been co-opted by a movement of anti-Christian demagogues. All one can say with any certainty is that there will be some very nasty surprises awaiting the evangelical warmongers on judgment day. Perhaps the current war is just one way of separating the true believers from the pretenders who use Christianity to mask temporal political ambitions. I often wonder, in fact, if Tim LeHaye and company have it all wrong. Perhaps the current “evangelical” majority, with its misguided message that panders to the basest of human instincts in the form of warmongering bloodlust, represents the Anti-Christ, not the shadowy secular forces so popular in the imagination of “Left Behind” subscribers. Only time and history will tell.
