Welcome to Liberrants, a blog dedicated to editorials, discussions, and studies of all things libertarian. Don't let the title mislead you; it's merely my attempt to be creative in describing myself as a "hopeful curmudgeon" who embraces the goal of the free, peaceful, economically vibrant society envisioned by America's founding fathers. A critically thinking curmudgeon whose goal, in addition to creatively venting about the imperfect world in which we live, is to induce critical thinking in others. The ultimate goal is to help bring about a peaceful world in which we can all live in freedom.

Free Plug For

Last week I downloaded a developmental open-source application from called "FreeMind." A colleague had brought it to my attention and said that he has found it to be an invaluable tool in organizing and mapping thought processes and a useful tool for both project management and personal organization. I have to agree. I’ve often found myself in the middle of trying to organize a set of tasks or processes using Microsoft Project, only to discover that unless you have your task processes organized into some structured relationship, Project's features become time-consuming and tedious. While the features of FreeMind aren’t quite what I would call intuitive (but better than others I’ve used), the application itself is well documented and as with all SourceForge products, the development teams are always open to comments, suggestions, and bug fixes. If you’re looking for a cheap and easy tool for mapping processes or ideas, I would recommend this one as a good candidate. Executables are available for download for both Windows and X-Windows systems.

You should also check out the free concept mapping tool from the Institute for Human Machine Cognition (IHMC) at the University of West Florida. It is available here:
